Science of Dance engages students at Leona Libby (photo gallery)

Leona Libby Middle School students recently explored the concepts of gravitational waves through dance. Mid-Columbia Ballet (MCB) teamed with LIGO Hanford Observatory to create the learning opportunity which combines science and the arts.

In PE classes, Renee Adams of the MCB taught the students a traditional folk dance. The students then followed the creative process (similar to the engineering design process) in developing their own folk dances related to the movement patterns of gravitational waves.

The project extended into science classes and eighth graders made another connection when they took a field trip to LIGO in mid-March. In May, the Libby students will participate in a community event which will feature some Science of Dance projects.

The Science of Dance is funded in part by the Washington State Arts Commission. Libby is a STEAM school - science, technology engineering, arts, and mathematics.
