Richland High student selected as AVID conference speaker

Richland High School senior Elias Duran has been selected to be the keynote speaker at the Seattle AVID Summer Institute this July. According to Toree Markussen, RHS 12th grade AVID teacher and site coordinator, nearly one thousand students submitted speeches in the competition.

Elias will be working with Stacy VanHercke, Western Division AVID Program Manager, to fine tune the speech which will be delivered to an audience of 5,000 students, teachers, and administrators from throughout the northwest.

"Elias reflects the very best of what AVID is,” says VanHercke. “We are honored that he will share his story.”

“Elias, has overcome a tremendous amount of adversity the last four years,” adds Markussen. “Elias is a humble and forward thinking person. He will be attending Washington State University in the Fall. I am so proud of him.”
