Project-Based Learning Teaching River's Edge Students To Give Back

After learning how hunger affects others in our community, students participating in a new project-based learning program at River’s Edge High School are asking the community to join them in helping others.

“Project-based learning is a way for students to experience the power of what they learn and putting it into practice,” says Principal Nicole Anderson. “It connects the dots.”

Several teachers at River’s Edge are trying out project-based learning as part of a re-imagining process to make the school into a destination for high school students who want something other than the traditional high school experience. The school’s small enrollment, varied learning programs and the strong relationships staff build with students already help set it apart from a typical high school.

Project-based learning gives the students the opportunity to identify for themselves what they plan to learn and how they’d apply it to real world issues and needs. Students share they like the freedom project-based learning provides as well as how it relates to what they see in the community.

REHS students are asking the community to join them in this effort by donating items for the boxes.

Items being requested include:

  • Toiletries/hygiene products
  • Non-perishable food
  • Gloves, socks, hats, underwear
  • Small crafts and toys for kids
  • First aid supplies (adhesive bandages, etc.)

All donations will be boxed and sent to local shelters that provide services for homeless teens and women & children

Donations can be dropped off at River’s Edge High School, 975 Gillespie St., until Dec. 5.
