Road construction on George Washington Way will affect vehicle and pedestrian traffic for the Early Learning Center, Jefferson and Sacajawea elementary schools and Hanford High School.The district is working with the city of Richland and its contractors to ensure students will be able to safely get to and from school each day.
- Hanford High School (UPDATED 8/30/19): Two intersections on George Washington Way near Hanford High School will be temporarily closed for paving on Sept. 3 & 4
- Tuesday, Sept. 3: Hanford and Spengler streets west of George Washington Way closed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Wednesday, Sept. 4: Hanford and Spengler streets west of George Washington Way closed 6 to 10 a.m.
Students, staff and families traveling to and from Hanford High School should use the the alternate route (outlined in green on the map provided) to get around the construction area:

- Stevens Drive to University Drive
- University Drive to George Washington Way
- George Washington Way to Sprout Road
- Sprout Road to Hanford High’s north campus entrance

Students should leave for school at least 15 minutes earlier than usual to ensure they can be in class on time. Carpooling is encouraged and students should avoid leaving campus during lunch periods. They should also be sure to drive safely and be fully aware of road conditions when behind the wheel.
- Jefferson Elementary & Early Learning Center: There will be a temporary crosswalk set up south of the intersection with Van Giesen Street in front of the Best Western hotel to provide a safe pedestrian crossing. This crosswalk will be staffed throughout each school day by flaggers who will stop traffic whenever someone needs to cross. Paraeducators will be stationed here to walk across with students before and after school as well as at the Van Giesen intersection to direct students and families to the temporary crosswalk.
- Sacajawea Elementary: Students will be able to cross George Washington Way at Saint Street. This crosswalk will be staffed throughout each school day by flaggers who will stop traffic whenever someone needs to cross. Paraeducators will be stationed here to walk across with students before and after school as well as at the Fuller Street intersection to direct students and families to the Saint Street crosswalk.
Families will be notified if there are any additional impacts to access of schools because of road construction. For any additional questions, please contact your child’s school.
