The Richland School District, in collaboration with the City of West Richland, is thrilled to announce that they have been awarded $250,508 by the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) to improve school zone pedestrian safety. This grant, funded in part by Washington's Climate Commitment Act (CCA), aims to enhance pedestrian safety in school zones across the community.
The project, selected as an early opportunity Complete Streets project, will focus on implementing improvements at multiple locations throughout the area. This endeavor underscores the commitment of both the school district and the city to prioritize pedestrian safety.
"We are grateful to partner with the City of West Richland in our shared goal of enhancing pedestrian safety within our school zones," said Dr. Shelley Redinger, Superintendent of the Richland School District. "Ensuring the safety of our students is our top priority, and these improvements will significantly contribute to creating a safer environment for all community members."
The grant will fund the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) at strategic intersections near Enterprise Middle School, Tapteal and William Wiley Elementary schools. These RRFBs will be added at the following locations:
- Blue Heron Blvd/Paradise Way
- S. 54th Ave/Paradise Way
- N. 62nd Ave/Gray Street
- Holly Way/Rose St
- S. Highlands Blvd/Spirea Dr.
The addition of Pedestrian Activated Crossings RRFBs represents a significant step towards enhancing safety measures in school zones, addressing the concerns of the school district, parents, and the broader community.
“Ensuring the safety of our children as they travel to and from school is a responsibility we all share,“ said Mayor Brent Gerry. “The City of West Richland, together with the Richland School District, is committed to creating an environment where our youngest citizens can learn and grow safely.
Construction for the project is slated to begin in the summer of 2024, with the aim of providing safer pedestrian infrastructure ahead of the new school year.
