Congratulations To Our 2026 Crystal Apple Award Winner

The Richland School District is proud to honor Nicole Tamura, Richland High School Life Skills Special Education Teacher, as our 2026 Crystal Apple Award winner. Nicole has worked in the Richland School District for more than a decade and joined the special education team at Richland High School in 2020.

As a Life Skills Teacher, Nicole works with students of varying abilities, teaching functional, everyday skills alongside academics with the goal of helping students become more independent in real-world settings.

Nicole demonstrates exceptional care in preparing and maintaining a constructive, supportive, and engaging learning environment. She is endlessly creative in her use of resources and curriculum, designing activities and learning spaces that ensure every student can access meaningful instruction.

One of the innovative and impactful ways Nicole helps her students gain real-world experience is through her coffee cart delivery program. This program not only raises funds for her classroom but, more importantly, provides her students with daily opportunities to interact with staff, build relationships, and develop confidence and a sense of responsibility.

“My daughter can run the coffee cart with confidence, applying the skills she has learned in a meaningful and empowering way,” said Richland High parent Christina Cortez. “This experience has been invaluable to her growth and would not be possible without Mrs. Tamura’s creativity and dedication.”

Nicole’s commitment to her students extends well beyond the classroom. She attends extracurricular events, performances, and community activities—not because she has to, but because she genuinely wants to celebrate her students and show them that they matter. Families trust and respect her deeply, knowing she is a true partner in their children’s growth.

“[Nicole] consistently demonstrates an unwavering belief in every child’s ability to succeed,” said Natilee Ruiz, special education teacher at Richland High School. “She sees each student as a whole person, not defined by limitations, but by strengths, potential, and individuality.”

In addition to her dedication to students and families, Nicole is a tremendous colleague and team builder. She works tirelessly to strengthen and support her peers, the special education department, and the district as a whole.

“Education was not just a profession for Nicole, but a calling,” said special education coordinator Amanda Rexford. “She models professionalism, kindness, and integrity, strengthening every team she is part of.”

Nicole represents the very best of Richland School District—an educator whose primary focus is always students and whose commitment to their growth, dignity, and potential is evident in everything she does. We are immensely proud to name Nicole Tamura as our 2026 Crystal Apple Award winner.
