Superintendent Dr. Shelley Redinger

Updates, messages and thoughts from Dr. Shelley Redinger To THE RSD COMMUNITY on the important work going on in RSD schools.

Sept. 6, 2023

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians, and School Community,

Excitement filled our school buildings last week as we welcomed students back after a rejuvenating summer break. I love hearing the laughter and clatter of students back in our classrooms and hallways.

As we navigate the opportunities that lie ahead this school year, I want to assure you that our commitment to providing a safe, welcoming and enriching educational environment remains steadfast. Our dedicated educators, staff, and administrators have been hard at work over the summer, preparing for the return of our students and the start of meaningful learning experiences.

Key highlights and initiatives for this school year include:

  1. Enhanced Safety and Security: Student and staff safety is one of our top priorities. The passage of our Capital Projects levy allows us to move forward with outfitting our schools with secure entrances, surveillance cameras and advanced security systems.
  2. Innovative Learning: 2023-24 brings a variety of new classes and course offerings to the district. The district’s first bilingual classrooms opened at Tapteal Elementary serving students in grades K-1. At the secondary level American Sign Language has been added as a new World Language course, giving students the chance to learn about and connect with the Deaf Community.
  3. Well-being: CharacterStrong and PurposeFull People, our new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, has been implemented district-wide! This curriculum creates a positive school culture driven by engagement, belonging and well-being.
  4. Community Engagement: We continue to value the partnership between our schools and the community. I encourage you to stay connected with your child's school and participate in parent-teacher conferences, open houses, and other events community events. We have several family education presentations to look forward to this year. The first will be held on Sept. 25 and focuses on highly capable students and education.
  5. Timely Communication: This year we have rolled out a new communication tool, ParentSquare. Weather alerts, emergency notifications and school/district news will be sent instantly to your email, as a text message and/or on the ParentSquare app. All messages are translated into a family’s home language, allowing staff and administrators to communicate more effectively.

I want to express my gratitude for your continued support and trust in our educational system. Together, we will make this school year a memorable and successful one for every student. I look forward to seeing our school community flourish and grow.

Wishing you all a fantastic 2023-24 school year! Let us embark on this journey with hope, determination, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Looking forward to seeing you out in the community and in our schools.

-Shelley
