2422 - Grade Point Computation (Class Rank)

Academic rank in class is determined by a student’s grade point average (GPA), except that non-numerical marks/grades shall be excluded from the calculation of the GPA. The GPA is a numerical score applied to the final letter grades earned towards satisfying high school graduation requirements. 

GPA = Grade Point Earned / Units Attempted 

A student’s grade point average shall be reported on his/her term grade report. Such calculations may also be used for recognizing individual students for their achievement. 

Advanced placement (AP) classes may be offered at the senior high level. These classes are of substantially greater depth and rigor than regular classes. All AP classes must be authorized in advance by the superintendent. 

Grade points are awarded on the following basis: 

Students entering 9th grade (prior to fall 1984):

Advanced Placement 

To qualify as an advanced placement credit course, the following requirements must be met: 

1. The subject matter of the course is dealt with in greater depth than similar courses in the regular program and at a level consistent with requirements to successfully compete in the advanced placement testing program. 
2. Advanced placement courses must be approved by the superintendent of his designee. 
3. Courses carrying advanced placement credit shall be designated by the “Advanced Placement” or “AP” in all course catalogs, registration materials, and related information given to students and parents. 
4. Advanced placement courses shall be identified as such on grade reports, transcripts, and other school records which contain this information. 

Courses approved to receive advanced placement credit beginning with the 1986-87 school year are:

• Chemistry 
• Computer Science 
• English Composition and Literature 
• Physics 
• United States History
