Since 1993, the Richland Education Foundation has helped bridge the gap between available public funding and the increased need for innovative educational programs in our schools.
Thanks to the contributions of many community businesses and individuals, the foundation makes a significant educational impact and provides opportunities for personal growth for our students. More than 95% of the funds raised go directly to funding the educational grants the foundation awards to educators within the district.
Educational grants are awarded by the foundation once a year to teachers, schools and other district representatives. Applications open each winter and are due by March 15, 2021. All requests may be sent to REFfoundation@gmail.com or PO Box 1759, Richland, WA, 99352.
In 2008, the Richland Education Foundation established the Dr. Richard Semler Superintendent’s Scholarship. The endowed scholarship was established with donations from the Richland Education Foundation and community members totaling $25,000. The Richland Education Foundation manages the endowment according to its investment guidelines. Dr. Semler requested the scholarship be awarded to a Richland School District senior who shows leadership potential and is seeking a bachelor’s degree in math, science or the arts (visual or performing).

In 2006, the Richland Education Foundation established the George and Esther Alkire Math and Science Memorial Scholarship at Richland High School. The endowed scholarship was established with a gift of $25,000 from the estate of George and Esther Alkire. The Richland Education Foundation manages the endowment according to its investment guidelines. The annual scholarship of $1,000 or 50% of investment earnings, whichever is greater, is awarded to a graduating Richland High School Senior who plans on majoring in math or science at an accredited four year university. George and Esther believed in the value of education and especially urged young people to pursue math and science as a rewarding life. All three of their sons graduated from Richland High School. George spent his career as a nuclear chemist with the Hanford Project and Esther was a math teacher.
