History project challenges students

Seventh grade students in Scott Freelund’s Washington State history class at Enterprise Middle School have been learning about the importance of railroad lines and how they affected the region’s growth from 1870 to 1920. “Seattle and Tacoma were competing to be the larger urban area and the location of train stations was critical,” explains Freelund.

Students were challenged to design a city and include a key element, like a train station, and explain how that element could affect a city’s growth. Carley Mills and Carolynn McCulloch teamed up to create the city shown above. “Carley and Carolynn exceeded expectations in how they researched and designed their city,” adds Freelund.
