Welcome to Tapteal Elementary, home of the Hawks! I am honored to serve as your principal and excited about working with you, your children and the fine professional staff here at Tapteal. Our dynamic, positive learning community serves five hundred youngsters and their families in grades K-5. What a joy it is to pass through the doors of this school. You will feel the caring atmosphere and know we are dedicated to a safe learning environment. As you look around the office walls, you will notice a list of special parent volunteers for the month, student art and the beliefs of our teachers.

As you continue down the halls of our school, you will hear staff and students involved in learning. We are deeply committed to developing reading strategies found in the Mosaics of Thought. Students are involved in reading at their level of instruction and they are skilled at discussing their connections with their reading. They expertly share their background experience and knowledge. They also know how to ask questions and determine importance of what they read. When students do math at Tapteal, they not only know how to compute numbers, they can explain their thinking and know many ways to get to an answer.

Why are we so successful? We have dedicated staff. Two of them are Nationally Board Certified. Three staff members have been trained in Colorado with the Public Education and Business Consortium (PEBC). These teachers along with a fourth staff member are district trainers of these strategies. Our Math Specialist not only guides our instruction with alignment with the state’s Grade Level Expectations, she facilitates collaboration with the “lesson study” model. She is also a math trainer for the Richland School District, and was a presenter at the OSPI winter institute in Seattle.

Students are involved in many school clubs such as Circus Club, where kids learn to juggle everything from scarves to balls. Kids also learn to unicycle, some can unicycle while juggling! They walk on stilts and use Chinese Yo-Yo’s! Another club is the famous Kid Calypso Steel Drum Band that travels across the state of Washington to perform and even to California to perform at Disneyland. Our art instructor is another gift to the students at Tapteal. She conducts an art club where students learn how to draw and appreciate artistic talent. We also have a school newspaper where students write articles and take photos of life at Tapteal. Our PTA works closely with staff and provides support for field trips, assemblies and other events so critical to the community of Tapteal learners.

Our school is a community of learners who enjoy supporting each other. I extend an invitation to each parent to support the activities of the school and keep communication open. Together we can make a difference.

Thank you for visiting our website - now please come and visit the school! You are welcome any time. Thank you for your confidence, support, and for sending your wonderful children to us each day.
