CONNECTED MATHEMATICS 7TH GRADE EXPECTATIONS AND COURSE SYLLABUS 2005-2006
Welcome! My name is Mrs. Lomax and I am your son/daughter’s 7th grade Mathematics teacher. Below you will find some important information regarding my classroom policies and expectations. I am excited to have the opportunity to teach your child, and I look forward to working with you on this endeavor. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS This math class designed to prepare students for eighth grade math. The topics include variables, fractions, solving equations, basic geometry, percents, probability, statistics, and problem solving. Students will apply these concepts in a challenging problem based curriculum.
COURSE OBJECTIVES 7th grade math is designed to integrate problem solving throughout the curriculum and within their daily lives preparing them for 8th grade math. This curriculum is aligned with the Washington state essential learning’s and will cover: number sense, geometry, algebraic sense, statistics/probability, measurements, problem solving, reasoning, and real life connections
ESSENTIAL ACADEMIC LEARNING REQUIREMENTS 1 - The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics. 2 - The student uses mathematics to define and solve problems. 3 - The student uses mathematical reasoning. 4 - The student communicates knowledge and understanding of both everyday and mathematical language. 5 - The student understands how mathematical ideas connect within mathematics, to other subject areas, and to real-life situations. GRADING Grades are based on: Participation, tests, quizzes, daily assignments, projects, and activities. A 94-100% C+ 77-79 A- 90-93% C 73-76% B+ 87-89% C- 70-72% B 83-87% D+ 67-69% B- 80-82% D 60-66%
Behavioral Expectations and Consequences: 1. Everyone is expected to give his or her best effort and to help create a positive learning environment. 2. Bring a positive attitude and materials to class. 3. Homework is due at the beginning of class. We will review all homework and you will have a chance to correct what you have missed. You are expected to do this so you can learn WHY you missed a certain problem. 4. Assignments missed due to an excused absence can be made up for full credit within two days of the absence. It is the student’s responsibility to get the missing assignments and to turn them in on time or the assignment will be considered a 0. They can use the board, me and/or another student to get the missing assignment
If expectations are not being met within the classroom, students can expect detention, and/or receive the consequences as set up by the discipline policy of Chief Joseph Middle School.
Algebra Placement Students will be required to take the MAP test in the spring to be considered for placement into Algebra for 8th grade. Students must score a 243 or better and maintain a minimum of 90% or better grade average.
