The Life Skills program at Carmichael Middle School is designed to meet the special needs of some very exceptional students. Children who face a variety of moderate to severe physical and mental challenges are provided with an individualized and very positive environment to gain the skills they need to make the most of their abilities. The location of most of the Life Skills program is in a self-contained classroom, however there are opportunities provided to integrate with peers in the general education community on a regular basis.

Individualized Education Plans are prepared for each student and include goals in some or all of the following areas:

· Functional Academics - The subjects of Math, Reading, and Written Language, as they relate to a student's ability to function in society.
· Pre-Vocational Skills - Students are introduced to a variety of jobs that will help them to generalize what they have learned into meaningful work.
· Social Communication - Direct instruction and practice in the area of social skills enables students to interact with their peers and adults in a variety of settings.
· Self-Help Skills - Participation in daily living activities such as personal care, home care, and food preparation help to move children towards increased independence.
· Special Services - Occupational, physical, and speech therapists work together with the teacher and assistants to facilitate growth and development according to the student's needs.
