    SCHOOL SPIRIT SAVINGS PROGRAM

Thank you all for participating in the Badger Mountains Spirit Savings Program last year! Our school is involved in several programs which allow us to benefit from participation. They are: Albertsons Community Partners, Target Credit Card Designation, Box Tops for Education, and Campbell’s Soup Labels. We had a wonderful year and hope to do as well this school year.

The Albertsons Community Partner card can now be linked to your Preferred card. There are two ways to do this:

    1) While at checkout, have the checker scan both your Preferred card and the Community Partner card. On subsequent receipts it should state at the end of the receipt that your Community Partner card has been successfully linked.

    2) On-line, go to www.albertsons.com and at the web site type in your zip code. Then click on the “In The Community” link. Click on the “Community Partners” icon and follow the directions for linking your two cards. You will need the number that is on the back of your Preferred card, and the Badger Mountain Community Partner number, which is 4 90001 00839 4.

For any future purchases at Albertsons or Sav-on Drugs you will only need to present your Preferred card. Community Partner cards can be picked up from the main office. Remember, out of state family members can use these cards also. (If you have trouble linking your cards, it could be that your phone number has changed since you signed up for your Preferred Card. Please call Albertsons customer service at 1-877-932-7948 and state that you need to update your information. When this is done then you should be able to link the two cards. Your Preferred Card will need to be linking annually in July to continue the great benefits for our school.

Badger Mountain also benefited from the Box Tops for Education program offered by General Mills. Again this year, in addition to collecting box tops, you can sign up for the Box Tops Booster Club or shop on-line via their shopping network. Check out the Box Tops for Education web site at www.boxtopsforeducation.com to sign up for the booster club, find out which products can be collected to turn in, or try out their shopping area for added benefits to our school. Badger Mountain will receive 50¢ for every person signing up for the booster club and a benefit of up to 10% on qualifying purchases spent in their shopping area.

Our participation in the Campbell’s Soup Label program has been productive. Our accumulation of labels in the past has enabled us to purchase Physical Education equipment for our school. Please visit the Campbell’s Label for Education web site at www.labelsforeducation.com to find an updated list of participating products available for collection.

For parents who shop at Target and make use of the Target card , just designate Badger Mountain as your school beneficiary and we will receive the benefit automatically.

Keep sending in your Box Tops and Campbell’s labels with your children. We also have a drop box in the Albertsons store on Gage and Leslie (the Badger Mountain bulletin board is by the big ice container by all the carts). Please keep up the good work and thank you again for all your participation in these beneficial programs.

REPORT on SAFETY at BADGER MOUNTAIN

    MEDIUM PRIORITY ISSUES

Part 1 of this article, outlining the high priority safety recommendations contained in the Safety Report, appeared in the May issue of Bobcat Tales. The following issues were identified as “medium” priority by the report:

The intersection of Keene Road and Elementary has no painted crosswalks, and the nearest crosswalk is more than a quarter of a mile to the southeast at the fire station. The city plans to install a light and crosswalks at this intersection when pedestrian traffic eventually becomes great enough. The city should be petitioned to immediately complete the installation of these safety features.

Bicycle lanes on feeder streets have not been carried through on Elementary Street. Clearly marked bike paths should be painted leading from all access roads past bus lanes and through school vehicle parking areas to the elementary school bike racks. The city should be petitioned to provide surrounding streets with bike paths or bike lanes.

The north parking lot (by Kids and Co.) should be designated for teacher parking and expanded to include the area that is currently used as a basketball court. Access and exit should be separated to calm and direct flow of traffic.

    LONG-TERM SAFETY INITIATIVES

Recognizing that traffic congestion is a growing problem at Badger Mountain Elementary School, four elements to a balanced safety program are proposed for long-term implementation. Elements from each of the following approaches should be integrated as budgets and time allow:

The Encouragement Approach encourages students to try walk or bike to school as much as possible. But if parents are to allow more walking and biking, they must be convinced that their children will be safe. Probably the most important action for Badger Mountain Elementary School is the development of an active and visible safety program. Badger Mountain PTO should maintain an active Safety Committee. Safety flyers should be sent home periodically to keep visibility of safety initiatives high and to report on safety progress at the school.

The Education Approach teaches students important safety skills and launches driver safety campaigns. An example of this approach would be having the principal develop a written drop-off policy and strictly enforce it, even issuing written warnings to offending drivers.

The Engineering Approach focuses on creating physical improvements to the infrastructure surrounding the school, reducing speeds and establishing safer crosswalks and pathways. The Enforcement Approach uses local law enforcement to ensure drivers obey traffic laws.

    ACTIONS BEING TAKEN

Together with Mr. Hansen, the Safety Committee has determined that the best and most effective thing parents can do at this stage is to set up a volunteer supervision schedule that limits access to the parking lot as a pick-up and drop-off area. The PTO Board plans to form a Safety Committee next year that will focus on organizing a supervision group made up of parent volunteers who will monitor the afternoon pick-up. Badger Mountain staff will develop specific exit plans that direct all walkers and those who get picked-up away from the front of the building. Special training will be provided for the student crossing guards as well.

The school district has said it will go ahead with adding sidewalks adjacent to parking and south drop-off areas, as well as moving crosswalks to safer locations where possible. The district is also supportive of the petition for improving the crossing at Keene Road.
