Members of the Instructional Materials Committee read high school novels which are being proposed for use in English classes. The IMC Findings and Recommendation form (F-3) for each novel are posted at this link.
District high school students have the opportunity to read a variety of novels each year. District policy allows for students and parents to request an alternative reading selection when a novel’s content/presentation is inconsistent with their values. To assist parents and students in making this determination, we encourage them to learn as much as they can about the novels by reading reviews from various organizations. These organizations represent a wide spectrum of viewpoints which reflect the wide range of values in our community.
Links to these organizations are listed below as a service to families. The Richland School District does not control these web sites nor does the District endorse the viewpoints expressed by the reviewers. We want to emphasize that these are independent web sites with no connection/accountability to the Richland School District.
Most importantly, the District encourages parents and students to communicate with the classroom teacher directly if they have concerns or questions about a novel's content/presentation. District teachers welcome the opportunity to explain how various classroom materials support the curriculum.
