Students engaged in studying biomes and ecosystems (photo gallery)

A biome is a community of plants and animals that have common characteristics. Orchard Elementary School fifth graders have been engaged in a recent study of biomes.

The students have learned that "biome" is a broader term than “habitat"; any biome can comprise a variety of habitats. Biomes are ecosystems where several habitats meet. The five major biomes are aquatic, deserts, grasslands, tundra, and forests.

“Each student chose a specific biome to research,” explain teachers Stephanie Fox and Angie Scherer. “Students used Chromebooks to research the biome of their choice and then created a Google slide presentation.”

Biomes are typically defined by climate, relief, geology, soils and vegetation. The fifth graders have learned that biomes play a crucial role in sustaining life on earth.

“The big learning for our students is that, within these biomes, there are many living and non-living factors that work together to create uniquely balanced ecosystems,” add Fox and Scherer. “The plants and animals depend on each other for survival. When an ecosystem becomes unbalanced, we begin to see the effects in our environment.”
