04/21/2015

The Hanford High School student newspaper The Altitude earned a Best of Show 8th Place Award at the National High School Journalism Convention* April 16-19 in Denver. This is the first time The Altitude has ever placed at the national level. Mickey Shin is the editor-in-chief.

“I’m proud of these HHS journalism students who show critical thinking, initiative, and creativity in their work,” said faculty advisor Nancy E. Smith. “Placing at a national convention is a real honor because of the caliber of work submitted.”

Four students brought home individual awards:

  • Elisa Apra, Superior – Infographics (the only superior given in this category)
  • Sawyer Henry, Excellent – Literary Magazine Photography
  • Mickey Shin, Excellent – Editorial Cartooning
  • Katie Peurrung, Honorable Mention – Yearbook Photography

“The national convention was a great opportunity to learn from professionals and from the thousands of other students who attended,” added Smith.
