HHS and RHS math scholars earn top honors at State Masters (photo gallery)

The 9th-10th grade math team from Richland High School earned a first place trophy in the Phi Division (ϕ) at the Math is Cool Masters State 3A-4A Competition November 18 in Moses Lake. The team’s score of 162 out of 208 possible was the fourth best score out of all 44 teams across all grades and all divisions. Team members are John Titus Barnett, Nicholas Chang, Alana Cho,and Zoe Gotthold.   

“The students have great attitudes and really enjoy math,” said Diana Carter, RHS math team advisor. “They support each other in their efforts to grow and learn new problem solving techniques.”

Other results from the state competition:

  • 11th-12th grade division – Hanford High School placed second in the i Division (highest) (Ben Hansen, Christopher Kang, Annie Shen, and Kevin Yang) with a score of 161. The HHS math advisor is Sonia Moursund.
  • 11th-12th grade division – Richland High School placed second in the Phi Division (Bryan Fang, Vincent Johnson, and Junsuh Song).

In the individual competition:

  • Christopher Kang, HHS, 3rd place - Calculus
  • Nicholas Chang, RHS, 4th place - Algebra 2
  • Annie Shen and Nicole Kimmel, HHS, perfect score - multiple choice contests

The Math is Cool Masters contest brings the top math students from across the state to Moses Lake.  The students compete as individuals and as teams in six different math categories.
