Richland High School freshman Zoe Gotthold recently returned from Washington D.C. where she was a Finalist in the Broadcom MASTERS Science Fair Competition. Zoe’s project focuses on the dangers threatening penguins from emulsions….oil trapped in pockets under the water’s surface.

The Broadcom MASTERS is the nation’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Math competition for middle school students. Zoe’s work began last year when she was an eighth grader at Carmichael Middle School.

The 30 Finalists were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists from 2,500 applicants representing 49 states, four U.S. territories, and 1 military base abroad. The Finalist award of $1000 will go to Carmichael’s STEM learning program.

As a fun sidelight, the Broadcom Masters Science Fair names asteroids after all the Finalists and their science teachers. Both Zoe and her Carmichael science teacher Branda Baker will be honored.

“I had an amazing time competing in Washington D.C. and getting to know the other finalists,” Zoe said.
