District breaks ground on Sacajawea project (photo gallery)

06/19/2014

The Richland School District broke ground on the new Sacajawea Elementary School Thursday morning. The general contractor is Fowler General Construction, Richland.

“This new facility will provide Sacajawea students and staff with a top quality learning environment,” said Superintendent Rick Schulte.

The new school is being built just east of the existing Sacajawea which opened in 1970. After the new Sacajawea opens, the old school will be used for one year (2015-16) to house Marcus Whitman Elementary students as a new Marcus Whitman is built. Then, in June 2016, the old Sacajawea will be demolished and replaced with a new playfield area.

Richland School District residents approved a $98 million bond issue for the new Sacajawea and eight other projects in February 2013. Details and timelines for the projects are available on the RSD web site.
