1982 time capsule opened as Jefferson community looks to the future (photo gallery)

It was a reunion and celebration at Jefferson Elementary School Friday afternoon as former and current staff and students were on hand for the opening of the 1982 Time Capsule.

“In anticipation of our new Jefferson opening this fall, we opened the 1982 capsule with special guests who worked here during that era,” says Principal Bobbi Buttars.

One of those special guests was longtime Jefferson principal Jerry Lane who retired in 1995.

For the past 36 years, the time capsule was hidden behind the cornerstone plaque near the front entrance. Among the random items found inside today were a 1981 phone book and a brochure from the 1982 Jefferson dedication ceremony.

“It was a fun celebration as we get ready to move into our brand new school this fall.”

The current Jefferson campus is comprised of the 1953 wing and the 1982 wing. The 1953 wing will be demolished at the end of this school year. The 1982 wing will become the Richland School District’s new preschool center.

District residents approved a $98 million bond issue for the new Jefferson and eight other projects in February 2013.
