Jennifer Hesse, Richland High German teacher, has been selected to present a workshop at the Washington Foreign Language Teachers' Conference October 8-10 in Wenatchee. Hesse will present The Power of Choice. On their own time, Hesse’s students access German online news sources, read books, and use Duolingo - a free language-learning software program.
“Students are motivated to learn language when they choose materials outside of class that are of interest to them,” explains Hesse. "Two of my German 1 students last year embraced these strategies and are now studying for the AP German exam."
The Richland School District is serious about addressing the income achievement gap. "We're taking steps to make sure that kids in our district, no matter their background, have a more level playing field," says Assistant Superintendent Erich Bolz. Learn more in this KVEW-TV news story.
