Walking Sticks Fascinate Students

A Badger Mountain Elementary School first grade student gets an up close look at a walking stick. Walking sticks belong to the orthoptera order of insects which include grasshoppers and praying mantids.
"The walking sticks are translucent and only 1/4 inch long when they hatch in August," explains teacher Christy Jagelski. "Early in the year, we read several nonfiction books about walking sticks. Students measure the sticks every other month and enter the data in their science notebooks. The students learn to become great observers."
