Middle Ages comes to life at Enterprise (Tri-City Herald; KNDU-TV)

Enterprise Middle School sixth grade students have been learning about Medieval and Renaissance history and the unit culminated yesterday with presentations on castles/sieges, the arts, dances of the Middle Ages, and a live jousting/heavy fighting demonstration on the school playfield. Putting on the fighting and dancing demonstrations were members of the Barony of Wastekeep, the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism. May 15, 2012
The Washington State STEM Education Foundation has announced that Katie Rowley, Hanford High School science teacher, is the 2012 STEM Educator of the Year for the Mid-Columbia Region. The award is given to one educator each year who advocates for, and has significantly impacted, STEM education in Southeast Washington. May 14, 2012
Badger Mountain Elementary School recently reached out to help grieving children. A coin drive netted $1174 which was given to Cork's Place, a grief support program for children which is operated by Tri-Cities Chaplaincy. School Board president discusses renovation/construction needs (KEPR-TV)

A proposal for a construction bond or capital projects levy could be decided by Richland School District voters next year. Hanford High School sophomore Sathvik Ramanan won the Grand Award in the Energy Category at the I-SWEEEP (International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering & Environment Project ) held May 2-6 in Houston. Ramanan’s project is “Effect of Chemical Induction on the Direct Conversion of Cellulose to Aviation Biofuels by Fungi Gliocladium Species”. May 9, 2012
All Children Exceeding Standards (ACES) is the Richland School District's new initiative to ensure that parents, childcare providers, and community stakeholders work together with the District to help young children enter school with the academic and social readiness skills they need to be successful. Research shows that the most effective and cost efficient time to help children is during their pre-school years, not after they enter kindergarten. May 8, 2012
The Richland School District has refinanced some outstanding bonds in order to take advantage of low interest rates. The refinancing will lower the District's bond tax rate and that will result in $1.1 million in savings to local taxpayers over the next 10 years. May 7, 2012
Richland High School students earned two major awards which were given out at the 2012 Washington State High School Art Show in Olympia. The winning students are Bailey Smith for a ceramic piece "Nature Vase", and Matthew Powers for a painting "Raining Ink". Fun Run to benefit Jason Lee Elementary School

The fourth annual Spring Fever Run to benefit Jason Lee Elementary School educational programs will be Sunday, May 20, at Centennial Meadows in Richland. There will be a one mile run beginning at 9:00 am, and a 5K run beginning at 9:30 am. Pre-register by May 4 to receive a complimentary t-shirt. Earlier this year, Chief Joseph Middle School teacher Tina Webb received a $2700 grant from the Richland Education Foundation to purchase a school-wide site license for VoiceThread and to purchase four iPads that are being used in Webb's language arts classroom and also a math classroom. She says the grant is having a positive impact on student learning. |

Band heading to Washington D.C.
The Chief Joseph Middle School Symphonic Band is traveling to Washington, D.C. this week where the musicians will represent the state of Washington at the 2012 National Festival of the States . The band will perform Friday, May 18, at the Jefferson Memorial. “Our Band Boosters commissioned local composer and French horn player Sean Brown to write a piece for this occasion,” explains Nancy Elliott, Chief Joseph band director. “He wrote Fantasy on Civil War Music and we have the honor of premiering that piece at the Jefferson Memorial.” RSD MEDIA
